PEI suspended its own fuel tax Saturday and Alberta will do the same, effective this Thursday.
According to
GasBuddy, prices in Moose Jaw have climbed as high as $1.87 per litre, while some Saskatchewan communities saw prices reach $2.20 over the weekend. Prices at the beginning of September were a full 30 cents per litre lower, on average.
“Families in Moose Jaw are feeling the squeeze. every time they fill up their tank — they shouldn’t have to choose between filling the tank, buying groceries, or paying rent,” Beck said. “Perhaps Scott Moe and his Ministers are too busy wining and dining on private jets to notice drivers down on the ground could really use a break.
Earlier this month, the federal government also announced it would continue to suspend the federal fuel tax until April 1, 2027.
The Sask. Party is due to collect hundreds of millions in revenue this year due to sky-high oil prices.
“Leadership is about choices,” said Kim Breckner, Shadow Minister for Trade & Export Development. “Scott Moe is choosing not to cut drivers a break. Instead, he continues to insist life in Saskatchewan is so affordable when every sign points to the exact opposite.
“Record homelessness, record food bank use and the highest rate of financial anxiety in Canada. Why do the Sask. Party’s own Moose Jaw MLAs choose to actively ignore their hardworking constituents who are begging for a little help? They deserve a government that grounds itself in reality and works actively to make life more affordable.”
