Future Leaders Feeling Stonewalled In Scott Moe’s Dismal Job Market
REGINA – Carla Beck is calling out Scott Moe for failing young people as youth unemployment has shot up over 13 per cent and many are packing their bags and pursuing opportunities in other provinces

“Young people are doing everything we’ve asked of them — they’re working hard in school, volunteering, building their resumes and trying to gain experience,” said Official Opposition Leader Carla Beck. “They deserve a government focused on supporting them and ensuring they’re doing everything they can to keep them right here in Saskatchewan while they build their careers, buy a home and raise a family.

Beck’s team’s is raising the alarm after nearly 900 people left Saskatchewan for other provinces last quarter.

Twenty-year-old Fidel Prudente is entering his third year of political science at the University of Regina. He currently works in the fast-food industry and says he’s discouraged by the lack of opportunities for young people looking to get into a profession and serve their community.

“I have joined student clubs to make connections with people in my faculty and am doing everything I can to be involved in my community,” Prudente said. “After all the work I have put in, I would have hoped by the third year of my degree there would be more opportunities for me.

“It's discouraging and makes me concerned about what I’ll do for work once my degree is over. I am starting to look at opportunities in Ontario because I can’t find it here.”

Latest data from Statistics Canada data also reveal Saskatchewan’s overall unemployment rates has increased to 6.2 percent — the highest the province has seen since the pandemic.

Beck says she regularly hears from U of R students who worry that rising costs and the lack of opportunities are forcing them to consider leaving Saskatchewan.

“Twenty years of inaction by the Sask. Party has left too many young people wondering whether they have a future here. That’s a failure of leadership, and Saskatchewan families are paying the price,” said Beck.

“We have top-tier talent coming out of our post-secondaries – these are students who work hard and deserve to start their careers here, contribute to the economy and build their futures close to home – they shouldn't have to settle for less.

“Clearly, it's time for change.”
