Worst of both worlds: StatsCan report shows Sask. Party failure to control COVID-19 results in worst jobs record in Canada

REGINA - New Democratic Party Leader Ryan Meili slammed the Sask. Party government for its failure to contain the spread of COVID-19 and protect jobs in Saskatchewan, as shown by today’s StatsCan data which shows Saskatchewan with the worst jobs record in Canada.

“Saskatchewan families were having a tough time before COVID-19 hit - and the Sask. Party’s failure to act to contain the pandemic when they had the chance means those families are even further behind,” said Meili. “The Premier has failed to contain COVID-19 and as a result we now have the biggest drop in jobs in Canada since the pandemic began. Saskatchewan families and businesses are paying the price for this Premier’s failures.”

Today’s StatsCan report shows:

  • 23,000 jobs have been lost in Saskatchewan since Feb 2020 – a 4% decrease that is the worst in the country among all provinces
  • Zero jobs created in March 2021 compared to February 2021 – the worst in the country among all provinces
  • 1,300 jobs have been lost since March 2020 – Saskatchewan is the only province with fewer jobs year over year, again the worst in the country among all provinces

“The Sask. Party’s failure to act to contain the pandemic when they had the chance has left Saskatchewan families with the worst of both worlds. Saskatchewan has led the country in COVID-19 cases throughout most of 2021 with far too many lives lost - and the worst jobs record in the country,” said Meili. “That’s not right. Saskatchewan families and businesses have been through so much and deserve better.”
