Kim Trew was born in Kyle, Saskatchewan and raised on the Beechy Co-op farm. He was educated in Beechy but for a period of two years in Guyana, South America where his family had moved. Kim graduated from Beechy High School and continued his education obtaining a certificate in Personnel Administration from the University of Regina.

Prior to his election to the Saskatchewan Legislature, Kim was employed at the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool for 12 years as a Safety Officer. At the Wheat Pool Kim was involved in the Grain Services Union and was a member of the bargaining team. He maintains membership in the Saskatchewan Safety Council.

Kim was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature on October 20, 1986 and was successfully re-elected in the general elections of 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007. During his first term as an elected member Kim was the NDP critic for SGI (Saskatchewan Government Insurance) and led the successful fight to stop the privatization of SGI.

Kim enjoys golfing, surf sailing, water and snow skiing. He is active in his church and community events. He enjoys any sport his grandchildren want to play.

Kim and his wife Lorna have 3 married children and 5 grandchildren.
