From "0 to 60" on the Nuclear File with No Consultation

The Sask Party election platform contained no reference to a nuclear reactor beyond “Enterprise Saskatchewan will: Explore and Identify uranium value-added opportunities.” And yet, within just a few short weeks, and scant months after being elected, the Saskatchewan Party government went from being in “very preliminary” discussions with Bruce Power about building a nuclear power plant in Saskatchewan to joining Bruce Power in officially announcing a feasibility study on the matter.

The Sask Party didn’t consult with Saskatchewan people on the issue before getting involved with Bruce Power any more than they consulted with them before meeting with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization.

What input has Enterprise Saskatchewan had into a possible nuclear power plant being built in Saskatchewan?

Timeline

  • In early May 2008, Energy Minister Bill Boyd confirms that the government has had "very preliminary" discussions with Bruce Power about building a nuclear power plant in Saskatchewan

  • In late May 2008, Bill Boyd and Environment Minister Nancy Heppner meet with officials from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization

  • In mid-June 2008, Bruce Power announces it is conducting a feasibility study of nuclear power in Saskatchewan. Bruce Power Preisident Duncan Hawthorne is joined at the news conference by Enterprise Saskatchewan Minister Lyle Stewart and Crown Investments Minister Ken Cheveldaoff

  • On June 17, 2008, Ken Cheveldayoff assures reporters that Saskatchewan needs all the power a nuclear reactor can produce.

  • On June 20, 2008, Premier Brad Wall tells reporters that if construction of a nuclear reactor proceeds in Saskatchewan it will be based on an export case because Saskatchewan won't need all the power a reactor can produce.

  • On April 2, 2009 The Government releases the report of the Uranium Development Partnership (UDP) that calls for a nuclear power plant and radiactive waste storage in Saskatchewan.

We have gone from 0 to 60 on a Nuclear Power Plant in less than 12 months, why won't the Sask Party consult people about this proposed change?

"Mr. Speaker, I want to be clear for the member opposite that yes, we will impose our views on the Crown corporations."
