It may be a tough road ahead for federal NDP leader Jack Layton but he has the support of his Saskatchewan counterparts. Dwain Lingenfelter says he called Layton today to wish him well after the federal leader announced that he's been diagnosed with cancer for the second time. Lingenfelter admitted that while Layton may look frail he is confident in his chances. “If anybody can beat the disease that he has been diagnosed with it will be Jack Layton,” said Lingenfelter.

The announcement by the Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan comes after the union rejected the latest offer from employers on Tuesday and follows job action by 60 members in Prince Albert the day before. Cathy Dickson, the association's president, says in a release that it's clear employers and the Saskatchewan government do not intend to negotiate a fair and reasonable contract.

Workers hit the picket lines

Unionized health-care workers walked a picket line here Monday, the first sign of job action by members of the Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan (HSAS). The union represents more than 3,000 health-care workers across the province, including 192 in the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region. The workers include paramedics, addictions workers, social workers, dieticians, respiratory therapists and hospital phamacists.

Fields across Saskatchewan still too wet for seeding

Soggy fields are putting a damper on seeding plans of farmers across Saskatchewan. In its first crop report for 2011, Saskatchewan Agriculture says most farmers are at least two weeks away from seeding. Excessive moisture and cool temperatures are keeping fields through much of the grain belt too wet for planting. Some areas in the southwest, west-central and northwestern parts of the province have dried out enough to allow for harrowing, applying fertilizer and controlling weeds. When farmers get onto fields will again depend on the weather in the next few days.

Re: Wall rips Ignatieff (SP, April 21). I'm frustrated at Brad Wall's concern that Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff would "overturn the democratic results of the federal election" by forming a coalition with the NDP or Bloc Québécois. First, nothing would be "overturned." Wall's notion that "the party that wins the most seats on May 2 should be recognized as the government, period" is not grounded in Canadian history or law. A functional government is only recognized as such when it proves to the Governor General that it has the confidence of the Commons.

Agriculture Canada quietly releases farm income projections...

The farm income projections, which were quietly released by Agriculture Canada and posted online, indicate national net farm income is expected to total $291.5 million, a 91-per-cent drop from 2009. Cattle and hog farms are expected to be particularly hard hit due in part to the impact of U.S. meat labelling regulations and a high Canadian dollar. Grain and oilseed prices prices are meanwhile down from the record levels seen in 2008. -The Leader-Post
