Saskatchewan suffers biggest loss in retail sales

Statistics Canada reported today that Saskatchewan suffered the biggest decline in retail sales among Canadian provinces, with sales falling by -1.1%. Finance critic Trent Wotherspoon said this decrease in economic activity should be of concern to the Wall Government.

“According to these figures, Saskatchewan has not only seen the worst decline in month-over-month retail sales, but also the second-worst year-over-year decrease in retail sales activity among Canadian provinces," said Wotherspoon. "The numbers show a clear signal that Saskatchewan consumers are not buying into the Wall Government’s spin of `two stories’ in the province’s economy. These statistics indicate people have less money in their pockets to spend, have less confidence in employment and are feeling the impact of a weakened economy.”

“The Wall Government can no longer pretend we are still experiencing the boom of 2007 and 2008. They tried to spin their $1.04 Billion deficit in November, and even went so far as to say the province wasn’t in a recession,” he said. “Brad Wall’s government overspent when times were good, yet now that the province’s growth has contracted, taxpayers are paying the price for Wall’s mismanagement, being dealt massive cuts to spending and programs, while school boards and municipalities are left scrambling,” Wotherspoon said.

“Today’s Stats Canada figures are just one more sign of how the Wall Government needs to wake up and face the real state of the economy. Their constant cheerleading is not a solution,” he said. “The Wall Government has continued to overstate the health of the economy, to the detriment of Saskatchewan people. What tools does a government that has created a shameful billion dollar deficit and debt growth have now that Saskatchewan families and businesses are feeling the pinch and the effect of a weakened economy?” asked Wotherspoon. “What we need is a strong government capable of managing the province’s finances to improve the economic prospects for Saskatchewan’s people,” Wotherspoon concluded.
