Public Health Care
Medicare has often been described as Saskatchewan’s greatest gift to Canada – but it’s so much more than that. The fundamental principle which underscores public healthcare – that a person’s ability to pay shouldn’t determine the quality of their health care – has become a Canadian institution which is valued above any other across the country. It has become a defining feature of what makes Canada a caring and sharing country to live in.
It’s no secret that New Democrats have played a proud role in creating and building upon the first-rate healthcare system which everyone in Saskatchewan benefits from. Since first introducing public hospital insurance, and then helping to expand it into the national social program Canadians know and cherish today, we have been building on that legacy ever since. The Saskatchewan Party are the inheritors of the Liberal and Progressive Conservative Parties, which so vehemently opposed the introduction of public Medicare. They will not unequivocally rule out privatizing healthcare services, even though private healthcare costs more and is not fair to people who can’t afford it. The Saskatchewan Party knows that they can no longer come right out and say they want to privatize our public health care system. Instead, they hide their agenda behind phrases like “efficiency review” and “health audit”. But make no mistake, the Sask Party intends to follow the lead of other right-wing governments, who have made cuts to healthcare and have opened the door to privatization. Related Stories |
